Tanner Hayes has always been comfortable taking life at his own pace. Originally from Billings, Montana, Tanner grew up with wide-open spaces practically in his backyard and learned early that you don’t always need somewhere specific to be to enjoy getting there. His family listened to plenty of music, but Tanner’s taste was all over the map growing up. Country became his favorite as he got older, drawn especially to great songwriting and artists who sounded like they actually meant what they were singing. His path into radio started almost by accident. Tanner was more interested in music than being the center of attention, but an opportunity to get behind a microphone showed him that radio didn’t require becoming the loudest person in the room. His relaxed personality, dry sense of humor, and ability to tell a story without trying too hard gave him a style of his own. Away from the station, Tanner enjoys getting outdoors, traveling, finding places that aren’t necessarily in the guidebook, and taking the occasional road trip without scheduling every stop before leaving. He’s a capable cook, appreciates a good local restaurant, and would usually rather spend money on an experience than something that’ll end up sitting on a shelf. He’s also remarkably patient — right up until technology refuses to do something it was specifically designed to do. That’s when the patience occasionally disappears. Tanner is independent, thoughtful, and comfortable with a little quiet. He’s not somebody who feels obligated to fill every second of a conversation, and when he does have something to say, there’s usually a reason for it. His humor tends to sneak up on you, delivered so casually that sometimes it takes a second to realize he was joking. That personality gives Tanner’s two Country Heat shows distinctly different flavors. On Open Road Country, there’s a little more movement in the air. Tanner brings today’s hottest country together with stories, discoveries, music conversation, and the feeling that whatever comes next might be worth checking out. On Sunday Chill, he eases things back without turning down the music that makes The Country Heat what it is. It’s still today’s hot country — just with Tanner bringing a relaxed Sunday attitude to the conversation. The two shows may feel different, but Tanner doesn’t need a different personality for either one.
